Why take your new puppy to puppy classes?

So, you have a new puppy or maybe you are getting your new puppy soon. You have been to the pet shop and stocked up on all the things you need, registered them with the vet and organised their vaccinations, what’s next? Why not enrol them in a puppy class (with a qualified and experienced IMDT trainer, of course), here are my top reasons why puppy classes are a great idea:

  1. Socialisation: Your puppy learns to be around other puppies and people in a safe and controlled environment.
  2. Support: You have the opportunity to ask questions about all those annoying, but perfectly normal, things that puppies do… biting, chewing, stealing things etc. You also get the support of your fellow puppy owners who are likely all going through the same things.
  3. Prevention is better than cure: If your puppy is nervous or worried about something your qualified and experienced IMDT trainer will be able to talk you through how to deal with it and suggest ways to build pups confidence without overwhelming them.
  4. Confidence building: For you and for puppy, a safe space for you to take them, with experts on hand and where you won’t be judged.
  5. Relationship: Yep, doing fun things together is a great way to build that all important bond!
  6. Pride: You get to show off your gorgeous new puppy!
  7. Finally… training: Teaching your puppy to love learning and teaching you a few tools and techniques to get your puppy working with you, with exercises for you to carry on at home and additional resources to continue yours and pups education.

“But, I have had dogs before” you say, “I know what I’m doing”… so come for the socialisation aspect and the support of your peers, or maybe it’s a while since you had a puppy or the last puppy was “easier”, “calmer”, “less bitey” or a completely different breed. I’ll let you into a secret… professional dog trainers take their puppies to puppy classes, do we know how to train our puppy? Of course, but we know how valuable the other stuff is too. Plus number 6. is a big draw 😉!
